About this event

This forum will feature presentations from a diverse group of civil society and government actors that explore major issues impacting persons who are deprived of their liberty such as: the treatment of persons in places of detention and the conditions of correctional and remand centres and police lockups; the mainstreaming of alternatives to detention, effective rehabilitation strategies and sustainable reintegration initiatives within the criminal justice system; and the protection of vulnerable groups in detention such as children in conflict with the law, the disabled and LGBT people.

The forum aims to raise awareness of both the human rights issues facing Jamaica’s detention system as well as recent successes that give us hope. Featured presentations include:

  1. "The Need for a Paradigm-Shift in Prison Administration: effective rehabilitation and reintegration strategies" – Carla Gullotta, Executive Director, Stand Up for Jamaica

  2. "Government Action Relating to Persons Deprived of Their Liberty" – Senator Mark Golding, Minister of Justice

  3. "Safeguarding the Rights of Children in Conflict With the Law: Actions taken & Needed" – Susan Goffe and Rodje Malcolm, Jamaicans for Justice

  4. "Strengthening Monitoring and Oversight for Police Lockups" – Steadman Fuller, Custos of Kingston

  5. "Voices from the Inside: Experiences of People within Jamaica’s Detention System"

  • Jason Barrett, ex-inmate at Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre “GP”
  • Rueben Kelly, Superintendent, St. Catherine Adult Correctional Center
  • Sheryl Bailey, ex-inmate at Fort Augusta Adult Correctional Centre
  • George Young, Stand Up for Jamaica

The event is open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Kindly RSVP to communications@jamaicansforjustice.org. Please do not hesitate to contact us for additional information about the forum and JFJ's advocacy on the issue.

We look forward to hearing from you.
